Nu-Tech Science and Technology Solutions
June 17, 2026
Located on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is one of the UK’s leading national scientific research facilities. Managed by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), RAL is home to around 1,200 staff working across pioneering fields such as particle physics, scientific computing, laser technology, and space research.
RAL is home to internationally renowned scientific facilities, plays a key advisory role to the UK Government on major research infrastructure and oversees a broad portfolio of international collaborations. Among its flagship STFC facilities are the Central Laser Facility and the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. ISIS is currently undergoing a £90 million expansion programme to increase its experimental capacity and enhance performance. In addition, £1.8 billion has been allocated to modernise STFC’s infrastructure over the next 15 years.
Also located on the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory campus is the Diamond Light Source, the UK’s largest scientific research facility. Diamond is funded primarily by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) via STFC, alongside the Wellcome Trust. Operating independently, Diamond supports advanced research across physics, chemistry and life sciences, while maintaining close collaborative links with STFC. Diamond is currently undertaking a £519 million upgrade programme (Diamond-II) to further expand and enhance its world-class capabilities. Priority science and technology areas of interest include:
- Automation and robotics: robotic sample handling, remote operation platforms, and automated control systems
- Computing and data processing: high-performance computing (HPC), data storage systems, and AI/ML solutions for large-scale data analysis
- Cryogenics: helium and nitrogen cryostats, superconducting magnets, and associated cooling infrastructure
- Detectors and imaging: X-ray detectors, CCD and CMOS cameras, and advanced spectroscopy instrumentation
- Optics and photonics: X-ray optics, mirrors, monochromators, laser systems, and specialist lenses for beam control
- Precision engineering and motion control: ultra-precise positioning systems, linear actuators, and nanopositioning stages
- RF and high-power electronics: radiofrequency cavities, klystrons, and high-voltage power supplies for accelerator applications
- Scientific simulation: modelling tools for beam dynamics, materials science, and data analytics
- Vacuum systems: high and ultra-high vacuum chambers, pumps, and sealing solutions for beamlines and experimental environments
We’re excited to join the Nu-Tech Science and Technology Solutions series alongside the team at Sarsen Technology, and we look forward to sharing more information soon.
